A hard-hitting batsman and a medium-pace bowler, Reid represented New Zealand in 58 Test matches. He captained his team in 34 of them. He scored 3,428 runs, including six centuries, and took 85 wickets. Reid was captaining the New Zealand team which defeated the West Indies in Auckland in 1956. They later recorded their second and third victories against South Africa in the 1961-62 series.
Born in Auckland in the year 1928, Reid made his debut for New Zealand at the age of 19. New Zealand were a weak cricketing nation in their early years and Reid played a part in making them stronger. Post his retirement, he became a New Zealand selector, manager, and also an ICC match referee.
