Former India Cricketer Sudhir Naik passes away in Mumbai

Former India cricketer Sudhir Naik passed away at the age of 78 in Mumbai on April 5, Wednesday. He was undergoing treatment at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai after he injured his head following a fall at his home a couple of weeks ago.

The right-handed batter played for the country in three Tests and two ODIs in the 70s. He amassed 141 runs in six innings of his Test career with his highest score of 77 coming in the second innings of his debut Test, against England in Birmingham in 1974. Naik last represented India at home in his third Test at the Eden Gardens against the West Indies in 1975.

Naik was also a former Mumbai Captain and will always be remembered for leading the team to a Ranji Trophy title in 1971 in the absence of big players. He led a team deprived of stalwarts Sunil Gavaskar and Ajit Wadekar, who were on a historic tour of the West Indies where India won their first Test series against the country. Naik was also the chief curator of Wankhede Stadium for a long time.
