Flashback: Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in the 2007 World T20
During a group match against England in the inaugural WT20 in South Africa, Yuvraj Singh illuminated the Kingsmead by hitting six sixes in a single over. Prior to the game, India was in a precarious position in the tournament and needed to defeat England to maintain their prospects of reaching the semi-finals in Durban.
Yuvraj and the then-skipper MS Dhoni were aiming for a good finish with the score at 171/3 at the conclusion of the 18th over. India had scored 155 runs in 17 overs with just three wickets lost when Yuvraj took the field. But following their argument with Flintoff, the angry all-rounder was riled up, and Broad was the victim of his mayhem.
Before smashing Andrew Flintoff for two back-to-back boundaries, the flashy all-rounder opened his bat with a single off the Englishman’s ball. Yuvraj had 14 runs off six deliveries at the end of the 18th over. Stuart Broad entered the scene, and England’s luck ran out.
The opening ball of the 19th over was sent over deep midwicket by Yuvraj, the following one over backward square leg, before he sent the third over wide long-off to make it three in a row. Yuvraj did not stop as he crunched the fourth ball over deep point, and followed with a pull over square leg on the fifth. He sent the last ball of the over wide long-on to create history as he smashed six in a row.
Yuvraj increased his scoring from 14 off of six balls to a half-century off of just 12 deliveries, which is the quickest half-century in 20-over cricket, both domestic and international. In addition, he became the first Indian batter and only other player after Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa to hammer six sixes in an over.
Yuvraj continued to score, finishing with a 16-ball 58 as India made 218/4. Coincidentally, Flintoff removed the Indian southpaw in the last over. India won the game by 18 runs after the English batsmen were restricted to a score of 200/6 by the Indian bowlers.
