Flashback: Two players to score 50 and take 10-for more than once in Tests

All-rounders are a vital cog for any team irrespective of the format as they bring a proper balance and stability to the side with their all-round skills. In the longest format of the game, their value raises even higher. The below-mentioned two players just didn’t score runs for their respective teams but also picked ten wickets in the match on more than one occasion.

Former legendary New Zealand cricketer Richard Hadlee and Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan are the only two cricketers who have scored 50 and taken ten wickets in a Test match more than once. Hadlee achieved the feat thrice while Shakib has done it twice.

Hadlee’s first instance came against West Indies in Dunedin in the year 1980, in the first of the three-match Test series. The Caribbean side batted first and got bowled out for just 140 as Hadlee took 5/34 in 20 overs, which included nine maidens. In reply, New Zealand scored 249 with Richard scoring 51 off 63 with the help of nine fours. West Indies got bowled out for 212 in their second innings with Hadlee picking up 6/68 in 36 overs with 13 maidens. The hosts Kiwis won the match by one wicket.

Hadlee’s second instance came against Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in Brisbane in 1985. Australia batted first and got bowled out for just 179 with Richard wreaking havoc with his spell of 9/52 in 23.4 overs with four maidens. He scored 54 off 45 with four fours and three sixes as the Kiwis posted 553/7d in their first innings. He took 6/71 in 28.5 overs with nine maidens in the second innings as New Zealand won by an innings and 41 runs.

This time, Hadlee took 6/80 and scored 68 off 132 with eight fours in the first innings and then picked up 4/60 in the second against England in Nottingham in 1986 as his side won by eight wickets.

Shakib’s heroics came against Zimbabwe in Khulna in 2014, when he scored 137 off 180 with 18 fours and two sixes and took 5/80 in 41 overs in the first innings. The spinner snared five scalps for 44 runs in 18 overs in the second innings as Bangladesh won 162 runs.

His second such instance against Australia in Mirpur in the year 2017, when his side batted first and Shakib scored 84 off 133. He then picked up 5/68 in 25.5 overs and 5/85 in 28 overs in the first and second innings respectively as Bangladesh won the game by 20 runs.
