Flashback: The highest score by a first-class team in a losing cause

Not often do we witness a team losing a match after posting a mountain of runs. Especially in First-Class games (domestic and international), a team doesn’t end up on the losing side after posting a massive total in the first innings. Recently, however, Leicestershire had to suffer that pain when they scored 584 and still lost the clash.

During the ongoing County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan on their home ground in Leicester, they lost the encounter after posting a huge total of 584 in the first innings.

Leicestershire won the toss and elected to bat first. Louis Kimber, Lewis Hill, Harry Swindells, Ben Mike, and Roman Walker all struck half-centuries while South African international Wiaan Mulder hammered a brilliant 156 as the home side posted 584 in 148 overs. Andrew Salter was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers for his spell of 4/158 in 42 overs.

Glamorgan declared their innings for five wickets for 795 runs with Sam Northeast wreaking havoc for Leicestershire. The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 410 off 450, which included 45 fours and three maximums. Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke also contributed with their solid knocks of 139 and 191 respectively.

In the second innings, Leicestershire got bundled out for just 183 in 59.4 overs with Mulder again top-scoring for his side with his innings of 59. Michael Neser took three while Michael Hogan snared four scalps as Leicestershire lost the encounter by an innings and 28 runs at Grace Road in Leicester. James Harris and Salter also chipped in with one and two wickets respectively to restrict the hosts to below 200.
