Flashback: The first Bangladeshi to have his name on the Lord’s honours board
Lord’s Honours Boards are the boards in the pavilion at Lord’s cricket ground in London, England. Players who score a century, take five wickets in an innings or ten wickets in a match in Tests or ODIs get the privilege to appear on the most prestigious board. Only three Bangladesh cricketers feature on this board and the first one was Shahadat Hossain.
The right-arm medium-fast bowler became the first Bangladeshi player to inscribe his name on the famous board. He achieved the feat during Bangladesh’s tour of England in the year 2010 when the Asian side visited the UK for a two-match Test and three-match ODI series.
In the first Test match played at the home of cricket, Lord’s, England batted first and posted a mammoth 505 on the board. Hossain turned out to be the only silver lining for the visitors as picked up five wickets for 98 runs in 28 overs, which also included three maidens. With this five-for, the pacer entered into the history books.
He took some crucial wickets of quality batters like Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan. The second player from Bangladesh to enter the honours board was Tamim Iqbal, who struck a magnificent century in the same encounter. The classy and experienced left-handed batter scored 103 in the second innings. Nine years later, Mustafizur Rahman became the third Bangladesh player to achieve this special accomplishment. He took five wickets against Pakistan in the 2019 World Cup campaign.
Talking about Shahadat, he has played 38 Tests and picked up 72 wickets. In 51 ODIs and six T20Is, the seamer has snared 47 and four scalps respectively. Out of the total 316 cricketers who have their names mentioned on the board, Hossain is one proud player of them.
