Flashback: Only players to score a double century in their 100th Test
Appearing in the 100th match irrespective of the format itself is a big achievement for any cricketer. Playing a century of games is monumental for any player and to do so in the purest format of the game has a completely different feeling. But Joe Root and David Warner are two such players who didn’t only smash a ton but completed a double hundred in their 100th Test matches.
England’s prolific batter Root became the first to slam a double ton in his 100th game. He did so against India in Chennai in 2021. The classy right-handed batter struck a magnificent 218 in the first innings of the opening Test match of the series.
Root’s heroics
The English side visited the Indian shores for a four-match series in early February 2021. The tourists batted first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and posted a mammoth 578 on the board thanks to double-centurion Root. Skippering the side, Root hit 218 off 377 with the help of 19 fours and two maximums.
The 32-year-old also hit 40 off just 32 in the second innings and at the end, it turned out to be the icing on the cake for him as England won the encounter by a massive margin of 227 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Recently, Australia’s swashbuckling opener Warner became the second man after Root to achieve the special feat. Playing in his milestone match, southpaw Warner hammered a spectacular 200 off just 255, which included 16 fours and two sixes against South Africa in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne in 2022.
It was Warner’s third double-century in the format as he made his landmark game even more memorable with an outstanding knock at the ‘G. Australia won the clash by an innings and 182 runs with Warner winning the Player of the Match award.
