Flashback: Only MI bowlers with consecutive four-wicket hauls
The Indian Premier League has witnessed several batters entering record books with their stupendous performance time and again. However, there have been a few bowlers as well who’ve etched their names in record books with their breathtaking spells. While four batters have registered back-to-back hundred in IPL history, only two have picked back-to-back four+ wicket hauls namely Munaf Patel and Akash Madhwal. Let’s take a look at both instances:
1. Munaf Patel
The right-arm seamer first picked up 4/20 during Match 9 in IPL 2012 at Visakhapatnam against Deccan Chargers. Patel picked up scalps of Parthiv Patel, Bharat Chipli, Dan Christian and Kumar Sangakkara. In the very next game, he picked up 4/28 in 3.4 overs against Rajasthan Royals during Match 12 of the season and helped his side defend 197 to win the match by 27 runs. He dismissed the likes of Rahul Dravid, Shreevats Goswami and Kevon Cooper and as a result, MI won the match by 27 runs.
2. Akash Madhwal
The 29-year-old seamer took IPL 2023 by storm with his incredible performances. Madhwal first picked 4/37 against Sunrisers Hyderabad during Match 69 of the season. The Uttarakhand seamer picked up the prized scalps of Vivrant Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen and Harry Brook. Courtesy of his spell, SRH couldn’t score above 200 and MI won the match by 8 wickets as they chased down the target in 18 overs.
Madhwal further bowled a sensational spell of 5/5 in 3.3 overs against Lucknow Super Giants in Eliminator. Notably, it was the best bowling figures registered by an uncapped player in IPL history and also the best bowling figures ever in playoffs. The 29-year-old dismissed Prerak Mankad, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Ravi Bishnoi and Mohsin Khan to complete his fifer.
As a result, MI bundled out LSG for 101 and won the match by a massive margin of 81 runs.
