Five times cricketers’ wives gave savage replies to trollers on social media
Cricket fans are known to be overly passionate and attached to the sport. And, in this age of internet and social media, it is easier than ever for them to directly reach out to their favourite cricketers by using these platforms. Most of the times the messages the fans sent are full of praise, but in some cases, things do go out of hand. In some cases, the wives and girlfriends step in to shut these fans. So, here’s a look at 5 such instances when the WAGS of cricketers gave savage replies on social media.
5. Mayanti Langer
An ace sports broadcaster and the spouse of the Indian cricketer, Stuart Binny, Mayanti Langer took it to Twitter to shut down a troll with a savage reply. Binny, the fast bowling all-rounder, after having a successful stint in the Indian team, hasn’t been able to make it into the side lately. And, in this season of the IPL too, he found no buyers at the auction.
This has brought Binny under the scrutiny of cricket fans in India, and the fan who got the reply from Mayanti had written a critical comment on Twitter. The comment said, “He is helping her carrying her baggage”.
To this Mayanti replied, “I can carry my own baggage thank you very much, he’s busy living his life playing cricket, just being awesome in general, and not passing comments on people he doesn’t know.”
4. Jassym Lora
Andre Russell, known for his match-winning all-round abilities has not been able to perform to the standards that he has set for himself in this season of the Indian Premier League. Playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, he has managed to gather 6 wickets in 9 matches and has failed to perform with the bat in hand.
Some of the fans of the franchise, critical of Russell’s performance, took it to his wife, Jassyum Lora’s Instagram handle to voice out their opinions.
One wrote,’ Jassym aunty please go to Dubai Russell is not in good form.’ To this she replied that Russell was in his best form. And, to the other user, who wrote, “Is everything ok between you and Russel mam”, Lora said, annoyed with his question, “I think so why.”
3. Prithi Narayanan
In the 2019 season of the IPL, while playing for Punjab, Ashwin, in what turned out to be a controversial series of events, dismissed Jos Buttler, by ‘mankading’ him. And, the coach of Ashwin’s current IPL team Ricky Ponting had said that he would talk to the cricketer about this, to which the cricketer’s wife had indirectly replied on Twitter with a witty message
Prithi Narayanan, in her Tweet in focus, commented on Ricky Ponting’s directive of not letting Ashwin or any other player in the Delhi team, ‘Mankad’ an opponent in this season of the IPL.
She wrote, ‘Last evening with beau Ashwin before he leaves for the IPL, which is basically forever. But the headlines made me “The Butler “for tonight.’
2. Danielle de Villiers
After AB de Villiers, the legendary South African cricketer retired from international cricket, ahead of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, his wife Danielle de Villiers took to her Instagram handle to put out a message. It read, ‘I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words… how wonderful life is now that you’re in the world. Much needed afternoon off with my one and only, confidante and bestie.’
But, one fan who was unhappy with De Villiers’ decision, poured out his frustration in the comments section of Danielle’s post. The comment he wrote even went on to question the intentions of Danielle and how she influenced ABD’s decision.
To this, Danielle aptly replied, ‘Seeing that you’re so full of wisdom and maturity, yes, he probably would rather be there, but you already know everything so I don’t need to elaborate. One thing tough, tread carefully when you comment so ridiculously on the sanctity of marriage. Consider this a friendly warning to never grace us with your pathetic and uninformed opinion ever again. Kbye.’
1. Narjis Amir
Mohammad Amir in the year 2019, came under a lot of scrutiny from the Pakistan cricket fans after he applied for a UK visa. This move came after he announced his retirement from the longest form of the sport, and this sparked a series of assumptions from the fans that the pacer was planning to go and play cricket for England.
When things did get out of hand, his wife, Narjis Amir, put out a long statement on her Twitter handle. Her statement stated that she and her husband were proud Pakistani citizens and there was no need for Amir to play cricket for another country. She added that Amir has only retired from one format of cricket and will continue to lend his services to the Pakistan One Day International and T20I teams.
