Five Test bowling records which might never be broken
Test cricket is considered the most challenging among the three other international cricket formats. It is also the oldest and most cherished one by cricket players. There have been many incredible records that have been created in this format. In this article, we are going to list five such records, which might never get broken in future.
Shane Warne: 96 Test wickets in a calendar year
Australian spinner Shane Warne holds the record for picking up most wickets in a single year. He achieved this feat in the year 2005 with his brilliant bowling picking a total of 96 wickets. The major reason for this record to be held forever by Warne is the low number of Test matches being played in the current era compared to the older one. In fact, among the Top-13 bowlers in this record list, all the performances have come before 2007.
Charlie Turner: 6 consecutive 5-wicket hauls
Australia pacer Charlie Turner picked up 6 fifers in consecutive innings in the year 1888. All of these 5-wicket hauls came against the English team. For a bowler to perform in this consistent manner is incredible, and it looks very difficult to break this record.
Jim Laker and Anil Kumble: 10-wicket haul in an innings
Jim Laker and Anil Kumble are the only two bowlers to pick all ten wickets in an innings. English spinner Laker achieved this milestone against Australia in the year 1956. Former Indian leg spinner Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan in Delhi Test, 1999. Among the two, Laker holds the record for best bowling figures as he gave only 53 runs, while Kumble conceded 74 runs.
Jimmy Matthews: Hat-trick in both innings of Test match
Australian spinner Jimmy Matthews is the only bowler in Test history to take a hat-trick in both innings of a Test match. He claimed this record against South Africa in the Manchester Test, 1912. With an extraordinary bowling performance from Matthews, Australia won this match by an innings and 88 runs.
Muttiah Muralitharan: 800 Test wickets
Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record for taking the most wickets in Test cricket. He picked up a total of 800 wickets in 133 matches he played for Sri Lanka. Among the current bowlers, English pacer James Anderson has taken 611 wickets till now. However, it is very unlikely that he will be able to reach near Muralitharan’s tally of 800 wickets. So, it is very much possible that Murali’s record will be held for eternity.
