Five most surprising omissions from T20 World Cup 2021 squads
The T20 World Cup 2021 is all set to commence from October 17 in the UAE and Oman. The cricketing fraternity and the fans are all raring to witness the action of the mega event unfold. Ahead of the start of the tournament, the countries have named their squads. However, the absence of few names in the squads announced by the teams has amazed the on-lookers.
Here are 5 Surprising omissions from T20 World Cup squads:
Shikhar Dhawan – India
Despite his explosive batting in the shortest format, Shikhar Dhawan did not find a spot in the T20 World Cup squad. Currently, he is the top run-getter of the IPL with 380 runs to his account. Thus, his exclusion amazed the cricketing world. The southpaw was even appointed as the captain of India for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.
Sarfaraz Ahmed – Pakistan
The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed did not find a place in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad. He has played 60 T20Is for the Pakistan side and has scored 812 runs. Though Mohammad Rizwan was the first-choice keeper-batter owing to his red-hot form, Sarfaraz might have got into the squad in place of Azam Khan.
Faf du Plessis – South Africa
Faf du Plessis’ exclusion from the side was also quite surprising. The former South African captain last featured in a T20I game for the Proteas in November-December 2020 against England. In the series, the batter hit two half-centuries. He has been in a splendid form in the Indian leg of the IPL and is also turning heads with his knocks for Saint Lucia Kings in the CPL.
Yuzvendra Chahal – India
Chahal did not make it to the T20 World Cup squad, and it came as a huge surprise for many. He was being seen as one of the key players of the side owing to his ability to pick wickets in crunch moments. Chahal has scalped 63 wickets in just the 49 T20I games he has featured. Despite being an important asset of the side in white-ball cricket, he was dropped as Indian selectors decided to recall R Ashwin.
Imran Tahir – South Africa
The ace leg-spinner still looks as lethal as ever with the ball and thus his omission from the squad seems to be a surprising one. Tahir has been playing some highly competitive T20 leagues over time and looked in a good form. He is a genuine wicket-taker who possesses the ability to provide much-needed breakthroughs to the team. His vast experience would have been handy for the Proteas.
