England Captain confirms playing XI against Ireland, Roy and Stone to debut

England’s Test captain Joe Root has confirmed his playing XI for the one-off Test against Ireland. The lineup consists of opening batsman Jason Roy and fast bowler Olly Stone. Both will be making their Test debut. The four-day match will be played at the Lord’s which commences tomorrow (24th July).

The debutants

Surrey batsman Jason Roy played a vital role in England becoming the World Cup winners recently. The white-ball opener attacked the bowlers from the onset which gave early advantage to the side. His form in the limited-overs cricket has helped him seal a spot in the Test side.

Olly Stone, right-arm fast from Warwickshire, had to return from the Caribbean tour owing to a back injury. He will now make his debut against Ireland. The 25-year old has played 36 first-class matches and has represented England in four ODIs.

Denly returns, Gregory misses

Joe Denly is likely to bat at number three. The ‘all-rounder’ narrowly missed out on the World Cup selection but returns to the longest format. Somerset spinner Jack Leach shall lead the spin department with Moeen Ali to assist. Lewis Gregory misses out from this Test. James Anderson, who was named in the 13-man squad, is also not available.
