England all-rounder Sam Curran ruled out IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup

England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season and the subsequent T20 World Cup as well. He has sustained a lower-back injury which was revealed after the cricketer complained of pain after Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Saturday. He underwent the scans soon when the extent of injury was known.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the news in the press release. Curran will return home soon and ECB’s medical team will observe him closely working with him in his recovery.

“He (Sam Curran) will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week from the ECB’s medical team,” ECB’s statement read. Sam Curran also missed CSK’s previous game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Monday (October 4). He also played only a couple of games in the UAE leg of the ongoing IPL conceding more than 50 runs on both the occasions.

Tom Curran replaces Sam in World Cup squad

England have named Tom Curran, Sam’s brother, as his replacement in the T20 World Cup squad. Tom was already in the reserves and was the part of the touring party that left the UK on Monday night. The non-IPL players in England’s T20 World Cup squad reached Muscat on Tuesday and will stay there until October 16.

Meanwhile, Reece Topley has been added to the squad as a travelling reserve and he is expected to join the team soon in Oman. England will be playing a couple of warm-up matches ahead of the Super 12 against India (on October 18) and New Zealand (on October 20). Their World Cup campaign will commence on October 23 against West Indies in Dubai.
