Duck after century: Only IPL batters to suffer the misery

They say sport is a great leveller. You can score a century on one day and get dismissed for a duck on the next. From the highs of reaching the three-figure mark to the lows of heading back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers, a player has to see it all on the pitch.

Let’s take a look at the players with a hundred followed by a duck in the IPL:

Yusuf Pathan

Rajasthan Royals (RR) played their first match in 2010 against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Yusuf Pathan smashed a ton for RR. MI batted first and posted 212/6 on the board. In reply, Yusuf hammered 100 off just 37 with nine fours and eight sixes and won the Player of the Match (POTM) award but the Royals fell short by four runs. In the next game, he bagged a five-ball duck against Delhi Capitals (DC) as his team lost the encounter by six wickets.

Suresh Raina

In Match No. 45 in 2013, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) met Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings PBKS) in Chennai. CSK batted first and Suresh Raina slammed 100 off just 53 with seven fours and six maximums as his side reached a total of 186/4. The home side won the contest by 15 runs with Raina grabbing the POTM award. In the next match, he got out for a golden duck against MI as his side lost the game by 60 runs.

Shane Watson

Shane Watson slammed a magnificent century for CSK against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2018 final in Mumbai. SRH batted first and set a competitive target of 179. But Watson had other ideas as he made a mockery of the target by hitting 117* off 57 with 11 fours and eight sixes. He single-handedly won the title for CSK and also the POTM award. In the opening game in 2019, his next, Watson bagged a ten-ball duck against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Venkatesh Iyer

In the ongoing edition, Venkatesh Iyer hit a solid hundred for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against MI. His side batted first and he hammered 104 off 51 with six fours and nine sixes. Though the Knight Riders lost the game by five wickets, Venkatesh became just the second KKR batter after Brendon McCullum (on the opening night in the 2008 edition) to hit a century. He also grabbed the POTM award for his hundred. In the next match, Iyer got out for a two-ball duck against SRH.
