Do you know? Two batters who hold the record for most fifties in consecutive Tests
Scoring a half-century is always an achievement for any player irrespective of the format but to do it on a consistent basis is exceptional. Two cricketers have managed to smash the fifties in 12 consecutive Tests and they feature in this elite list in what stands to be a world record.
Let’s take a look at the two batters who hold the record for most half-centuries in consecutive Tests:
1. AB de Villiers (12)
Former South African player and one of the greats, AB de Villiers holds the record for slamming fifties in 12 successive Test matches. His feat began against Australia in Perth in November 2012 and ended against the same opposition in Gqeberha in February 2014. Known for his heroics in the limited-overs format, de Villiers also stamped his authority while wearing the Whites. His 12 scores of 50 or above read as 169, 67, 51, 103*, 61, 121, 90, 164, 103, 74, 91 and 116. In his 14-year Test career, the classy right-handed batter played 114 matches and notched up 8765 runs at an average of 50.66, which included 22 centuries and 46 fifties with the highest score of 278*.
2. Joe Root (12)
One of the most consistent batters that England ever produced, Joe Root is tied with de Villiers at the top for slamming fifties in 12 consecutive Tests. His feat began against Bangladesh in Mirpur in October 2016 and ended against West Indies in Leeds in August 2017. Root’s scores read as 56, 124, 53, 78, 77, 88, 190, 78, 50, 52, 136 and 72. The second highest run-getter for England in Test’s history, Root made his debut in the format against India in Nagpur in December 2012. In his ten-year career, the right-handed batter has played 124 games and scored 10504 runs at an average of 50.01 with 28 hundred and 54 half-centuries with the highest score of 254. Notably, Root’s fifties in the streak also included a tough India tour in 2016 which England lost 4-0 (5).
