Delhi Capitals’ co-owner raises questions over India’s T20 World Cup squad

Delhi Capitals’ co-owner Parth Jindal has raised questions over Team India’s squad for the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The selectors named the squad earlier this month and a few picks raised quite a few eyebrows. Shikhar Dhawan, who captained the Men in Blue on the tour of Sri Lanka, couldn’t find a place in the squad.

Dhawan is also among the leading run-scorer in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League in the UAE. Not only has he scored runs, but got them at a healthy strike rate. Yuzvendra Chahal, who’s been India’s most prolific leg-spinner in the last four years, failed to make the cut as well. In his place, Rahul Chahar got an opportunity.

The selectors also decided to leave out Shreyas Iyer, who has played quite a significant amount of T20 matches for Team India and the Capitals, from the main squad. Jindal, in a few tweets, expressed his displeasure after a few players missed out.

Earlier, Chetan Sharma, the head of India’s selection panel, talked about the reasons behind leaving out Dhawan and Chahal from the 15-man squad for the mega event. While on Dhawan he said that the southpaw was rested, on Chahal, he quipped that the management wanted a leg-spinner, who can bowl fast.

“Shikhar Dhawan is a very important player for us, he was the captain in Sri Lanka. What discussion happened I cannot disclose. He is important and he is there in the loop. But the need of the hour was that we look at other players and give Shikhar Dhawan some rest, otherwise he is an important player and he will be back very soon,” Sharma had said.

“We had a discussion over Yuzvendra Chahal and the selectors thought was we need a bowler, who can bowl fast,” Sharma said.
