Dale Steyn recalls his career highlights
The South Africa pacer Dale Steyn recently announced retirement from all forms of cricket. With his swinging deliveries and lethal yorkers, Steyn disturbed the sleeping patterns of many batters around the globe. The speedster opened up about the highlights of his international career which commenced in the year 2004.
Dale Steyn stated that South Africa’s Boxing Day Test win against Australia at the MCG in 2008 is the match that he will never forget. He had starred for the team in the Test match. He played a valuable inning of 76 runs at a crucial stage of the second Test of the 2008-09 series.
Proteas were 251/8 in their first innings when Steyn walked to the crease. Australia had posted the target of 394 and it was a crunch moment for South Africa. Steyn however stood firm on the pitch and stitched in a 180 runs partnership with JP Duminy which changed the fortunes of the game. The pacer also registered a ten-wicket haul and was awarded as the man of the match.
“The Boxing Day Test at the MCG … the 10-wicket haul … the stand of 180 with JP Duminy, the 76, the first SA series win in Australia after almost 100 years trying. That will forever bring a smile to my face. Every Christmas – at least in South Africa – they love to replay it over and over on TV so I guess if they continue doing that until I’m pretty old, I won’t get ever bored of it. It was a great, great series, and a great game,” Dale Steyn was quoted as saying by SA Cricket MAG.
To bring the World Cup home would have been the cherry on the cake: Dale Steyn
The South Africa pacer had ruled the red ball cricket by exuding his excellence. In 93 Test matches, he scalped 439 Test wickets and graced the cricket field being second to none. Steyn opened up on being part of the Test team and also asserted that a World up was possibly the only missing link.
“But being the No 1 Test team for as long as we were, that requires playing well for a long period of time, many years of dedication and hard work, so that was great. However, it would’ve added the cherry on top to bring a World Cup home, [so that’s] possibly the only missing link,” Steyn added.
