Dale Steyn celebrates South Africa’s WTC final qualification
South Africa defeated Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion to qualify for the World Test Championship finale. The Temba Bavuma-led side needed 148 runs in the final innings but it turned out to be a difficult task as the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals. The Proteas were reduced to 99/8 and it looked difficult at one stage but Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada stitched a brilliant 51-run partnership to get the job done.
Former cricketer Dale Steyn was elated with South Africa’s qualification in the WTC final as he jokingly mentioned using his privilege at MCC to get a free seat at Lord’s. The 41-year-old highlighted that the team didn’t play a lot of Test matches but whenever they did, the players won it and helped the team qualify for the summit clash.
“What date is the WTC final at Lords? As a newly admitted member of the MCC, I might need to utilize my privilege for free seating. Well done boys, didn’t get many games but what you got you had to win ‘em all, and so win em all you did! And So you did. I’ll see you there! Fucken screaming aloud, it’s going to be monumental. Stay healthy,” Steyn tweeted.
Notably, South Africa has played some brilliant cricket in the last 18 months. The team qualified for the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 and also the final of the T20 World Cup 2024, where they lost to India. They have another chance of winning an ICC trophy and will be hoping to put up a good show in the WTC final, which will begin on June 11.
Meanwhile, Australia, Sri Lanka, and India are in contention to qualify as the second finalists. Currently, the Pat Cummins-led side is ahead in the race but if they lose their next three games, Sri Lanka will progress. India’s chances of making it to the final are slim but first, they need to beat Australia in Sydney. Then, the Rohit Sharma-led side will have to pray for Sri Lanka’s 1-0 series win over Australia.
