Cheteshwar Pujara named Sussex captain ahead of Middlesex clash

Indian batting stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara has been announced as the interim captain of county side Sussex ahead of their clash against Middlesex. The appointment comes as a result of an injury sustained by the regular skipper of the side Tom Haines, who walked off the ground after breaking a bone in his hand while batting.

The Sussex man is suspected to be out of action for five to six weeks, a massive blow for the county side. Pujara’s experience at the international level and his quality landed him the lead role. Notably, English pacer Steven Finn led the side in their previous encounter after Haines sustained that injury which forced him off the field.

Ian Salisbury, head coach of Sussex, lavished praises on the Indian batter and believes that his vast experience and expertise as a batter on the international stage will help the side. He further stated that the appointment of a batter as the captain takes the pressure off Finn, who can focus on spearheading the bowling attack.

“Puj was very keen to step up in the absence of Tom, he sees the potential in this side and has been a natural leader ever since he joined. Finny did a brilliant job for us after Tom was injured and will remain the senior figure among our bowlers. By having a batter take up the role, it means Finn can focus on leading our attack. Puj is a vastly experienced and qualified person who I know will do a fantastic job,” Salisbury revealed in a statement released by Sussex on Tuesday.

Cheteshwar Pujara will look to continue his splendid form in the county championship this season

Pujara has enjoyed a sensational stint with the county side this season, scoring 766 runs in six outings with an outstanding average nearing 110. The bulwark has recorded four centuries which also includes two magnificent double tons. Although he did not replicate the same form for the Indian team in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, Pujara would like to regain his form against Middlesex at the home of cricket.
