Briefing India’s struggles in ICC events since 2013 Champions Trophy win
Team India and knockout stage exits are becoming a familiar story since 2013 and the trophy hunt continues despite captains and personnel changes in over the last decade. India suffered a painful ten-wicket defeat at the hands of England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final at the Adelaide Oval on November 10 to end their run at the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Looking at the previous tournaments since the 2013 Champions Trophy win under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India’s performance has not been the best. In the 2014 T20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium, India suffered a six-wicket defeat despite cruising throughout the campaign.
In the next year at the ODI World Cup 2015 in Australia, India could not get past the hosts in the semi-finals as they crashed out of the tournament. The 2016 T20 World Cup in India turned out to be a different story as Virat Kohli’s blinder of a knock took the side to 192 in the summit clash, but it was not enough against a star-studded West Indies side who went onto become the champions.
The 2017 Champions Trophy was all set for an India-Pakistan final and a masterclass from Fakhar Zaman shocked the Indians completely. India waited another two years for the next big ICC event of the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and it wasn’t fruitful as the top order yet again failed in the semi-finals against New Zealand.
The 2020 year saw a minimal of international matches due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it came down to the maiden edition of the ICC World Test Championship final in 2021 against New Zealand. However, after two years of hardwork in the longer format, India succumbed when it mattered the most and lost to the Kiwis in Southampton.
The 2020 T20 World Cup was rescheduled to 2021 in UAE, and India did not reach the semi-finals of the edition after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games, taking an exit in the group stage. To sum it up, pressure has got the better of India when it comes to ICC events despite the domination in bilateral fixtures as they missed another chance in 2022.
