Brendon McCullum set to retire after Global T20 Canada

New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after the end of Global T20 Canada. The former Kiwi skipper has been playing for the Toronto Nationals in the tournament. McCullum already retired from international cricket in 2016.

The retirement means that McCullum won’t be able to fulfil his commitments in the upcoming Euro T20 Slam. He was set to play for Glasgow Giants in the tournament starting August 30.

McCullum confirmed the news of his retirement on Twitter:

In a heartfelt statement, McCullum wrote:

“As much as I am proud of what I’ve achieved in my 20-year professional career – more than I ever could have dreamed of when I first entered the game – I have felt the drive to keep going harder to maintain in recent months. I look back with pride over the way I’ve played the game and what I’ve achieved. With New Zealand we broke boundaries and established a style of play that earned us respect across the world. In T20 cricket, I’ve enjoyed so many varied challenges. I can leave the game knowing I left no stone unturned.”

Post his international retirement, McCullum has been a busy man playing the T20 format for various franchises across the globe. Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Brisbane Heat, Lahore Qalandars and Trinbago Knight Riders are some of the franchises he has turned up for. McCullum will retire as one of the most successful T20 players, the second-highest run-scorer in the format after Chris Gayle. His highest T20 score remains the 158* he scored for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first-ever match of the IPL.
