Brad Hogg picks Ravichandran Ashwin as the best bowler for 2021
Cricketer-turned-expert Brad Hogg has named India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin as the number one bowler of 2021. The off-spinner had a terrific year in Tests and T20Is. He ended the year as the leading wicket-taker in the longest format with 54 wickets to his name. He also made a comeback in T20Is and did well in the 20-20 World Cup and three-match T20I series against New Zealand.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Australia bowler also mentioned Joe Root was his best batter. The England Test captain finished the year by scoring a staggering 1708. He thus entered third on the list for batters scoring most runs in one calendar year in Test cricket.
“Spin to win, he’s the number 1.” Hogg also named Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali as his second and third choice for bowlers. “Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali, 47 and 41 wickets for them (respectively). They have been carrying Pakistan in the bowling department, so you can’t beat those 2,” Hogg added.
Pakistan’s left-arm pacer was simply phenomenal across all three formats. His three wickets against arch-rivals India in T20 WC was by far his best performance. While Hassan has complimented him well by churning out match-winning performances in Tests and ODIs. The right-hand pacer started the year with a bang against South Africa in a Test series and then ended the year by bowling well against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Ashwin has solidified his reputation as India’s best bowler across formats. He ended the year with 63 wickets at an unbelievable average of 15.93. Next on the list is Jasprit Bumrah picking 37 wickets in 14 games.
R Ashwin included in the ODI series against South Africa
After impressing one and all with his smart bowling in T20Is, Ashwin has now been included in the ODI squad for the team’s upcoming three matches against South Africa. The off-spinner last played an ODI in 2017, but head coach Rahul Dravid was impressed by his performance against New Zealand.
Ashwin has so far played 111 ODIs and has picked 150 wickets at an average of 32.91. His ability to maintain tight lines and having a knack for picking crucial wickets by varying his line and lengths make him a dangerous bowler. The seasoned campaigner would be hoping to make a mark in the 50-overs format.
