Birthday special: William Porterfield – Highlights from Irish legend’s career
Former Ireland captain William Porterfield will turn 38 on September 06, 2022. Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in the year 1984, Porterfield played his last international match in January this year before announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket in June.
Ireland’s most successful captain in ODIs and T20Is, Porterfield celebrates his 38th birthday on September 06, 2022. He captained the Irish side in 113 ODI matches and won 50 of those for the team. Porterfield also donned the captaincy hat in 56 T20 internationals with victories coming in 26 games. Talking about his batting records, he is the second highest run-getter for Ireland in one-day internationals.
The left-handed batter had struck 4343 runs in 148 ODI matches at an average of 30.58 and a strike rate of 68.95. He smashed 11 centuries and 20 half-centuries with the highest score of 139 in 145 innings. He is the fifth highest run-scorer for the Irish side in T20 internationals. William had amassed 1079 runs in 61 T20Is at an average of 20.35 and a strike rate of 111.12.
He struck three half-centuries with the highest score of 72 in 59 innings. William holds the record for the sixth-highest fourth-wicket partnership of 227 with Kevin O’Brien, which came against Kenya in Nairobi in the year 2007.
Coming back to his captaincy tenure, it was under his leadership that Ireland chased down the massive target of 328 and famously defeated the English side in Bengaluru in the 2011 World Cup. Ireland has played three Test matches so far in their history and Porterfield was the captain on all three occasions. He is in the eighth spot for most consecutive ODI matches as a captain of a team. He skippered the side for 67 successive ODI games from January 2015 to July 2019.
