Birthday special: Mujeeb Ur Rahman – Afghanistan’s rising star
Mujeeb Ur Rahman is a bowler who can outsmart the very best of batters. It would not be an exaggeration to state that Rahman is a prodigy in the sport with the ball in hand. The numbers that this youngster has generated in limited-overs cricket mark him out as a talent to watch out for.
In ODI cricket, the right-arm leg-spinner has taken 78 scalps in just 49 matches and averages 22.58. Mujeeb’s economy rate of 3.97 is a testimony to the fact that he can frustrate the batters with his ability to contain the run flow. In T20I cricket too, Mujeeb has taken 32 wickets in 23 matches at a tremendous strike rate of 16.31.
A few months after he made his debut for the Afghanistan side, Mujeeb made it clear that he wants to follow in the footsteps of Afghanistan bowling legend Rashid Khan. Adding that he is a role model for him, Mujeeb had made it clear that he wants to serve his country in the same way that Rashid has done.
“I am simply dedicated to continuing to enhance my experience by performing to the best of my abilities, the same way as Rashid Khan has done. He is a great role model for me and other Afghan cricketers. Just like him, I will continue to train hard and put in good performances and do my best to serve my country as long as I can,” Mujeeb had said in a chat with First Sport.
Mujeeb is already Afghanistan’s fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket and the sixth-highest wicket-taker in the T20I format of the game. Another memory from Mujeeb’s career that will not fade away is the delivery he bowled to batting maestro Virat Kohli in the 2018 edition of the IPL.
Mujeeb bowled a superb googly, Kohli went for an expansive drive, and the ball sneaked in through the gate to crash into Kohli’s stumps. Mujeeb is certainly destined for greatness and can make it big in the international arena. Here is wishing this hugely talented youngster a happy 21st birthday.
