Birthday special: Jemimah Rodrigues – India’s future superstar
One of India’s upcoming talents in women’s cricket, Jemimah Rodrigues is celebrating her birthday today (September 5). Born in Mumbai, Jemimah made her international debut in February 2018 and she has had an up-and-down career so far. She started with a lot of promise but went on to fade away after a while and was dropped from the Indian squad. The 21-year-old returned with a bag and is one of the top players going around from India.
Rodrigues has so far played 21 ODIs and 58 T20Is in which she has scored 394 and 1273 runs respectively. The right-hander is handy with her off-spin although she doesn’t bowl much for the country. With ten half-centuries in international cricket, Rodrigues could not repay the faith shown in her until last year.
The year 2021 proved to be very fruitful for Rodrigues as she was drafted into the Northern Superchargers women and she played a gem of a knock. The youngster’s 92 off 43 balls included 17 fours and a six and she kept finding the gaps throughout the innings. She finished as the second-highest run-getter in the tournament with 249 runs in seven games at an average of 41 and a strike rate of 150.
Her dream run earned her a place in the Indian T20I squad again and this time she had a specific role to play in the lineup. She scored 33, 44* and 56* in her last three innings in international cricket and was expected to continue the good form in the Hundred tournament this year.
She did start with a half-century at the top of the order, however, an injury had forced her to pull out of the tournament. With the immense talent she possesses, it is fair to say that Jemimah Rodrigues is a future superstar who can rule the cricket world.
