Birthday special: Glenn Maxwell – Top 3 knocks in international cricket

Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell is one of the best all-rounders to have represented Australia. Apart from his brilliant power-hitting skills in the middle order, Maxwell is also known to bowl game-changing spells with his right-arm off-breaks. The senior all-rounder has been one of the integral members of the Australian team’s two world title triumphs- the 2015 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup 2021 respectively.

As the Victoria cricketer turns 34 on October 14, here are three of his top knocks in international cricket.

3. 62 (28) vs Sri Lanka, October 2019

This was a memorable home T20I series for Australia as they whitewashed the Sri Lankans 3-0. The first match was played at the Adelaide Oval where the visitors were just silent spectators who witnessed Maxwell wreak havoc with the bat.

After skipper Aaron Finch and David Warner laid a solid foundation with a 100-run opening stand, it was the Glenn Maxwell show as he scored a blistering 22-ball half-century. He went on to score 62 runs off 28 deliveries as Australia posted a mammoth 233.

The Aussies decimated the Lankans by 134 runs as the visitors were restricted to 99/9 from their 20 overs.

2. 102 (53) vs Sri Lanka, 2015 World Cup

Australia and Sri Lanka locked horns at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground in a 2015 World Cup group encounter. Batting first, the Aussies posted a formidable score of 376/9 on the board.

It was courtesy of Glenn Maxwell’s whirlwind knock that the Australians managed to surpass the 350-run mark as he scored 102 runs from 53 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of 192.45 including 10 fours and four maximums.

This whirlwind knock helped the eventual world champions come out on top by a massive 64 runs in a high-scoring affair.

  1. 145* (65) vs Sri Lanka, September 2016

This has to be Glenn Maxwell’s best knock in international cricket where the power-hitter once again proved why he loves playing against Sri Lanka. The Aussies faced the Lankans in the first T20I at Pallekele.

Maxwell opened the batting for Australia after being put into bat by the home captain and he made the hosts regret this decision instantly as he took the attack to the bowlers right from the word ‘go’

He brought up his century off just 49 deliveries which was also his first-ever in the shortest format. Maxwell remained unbeaten on 145 runs from only 65 balls as the visitors posted a gigantic total of 263 runs. It proved to be way beyond Sri Lanka’s reach as they could manage just 178. Thus, Australia registered a comprehensive 85-run win.
