BCCI still to compensate more than 700 Ranji Trophy cricketers

Haryana Ranji Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to figure out a proper compensation disbursement plan for the players, who took part in the 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy. The compensation promised to the first-class players stands cancelled amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as the state units are yet to send in the necessary details, informed BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal.

The 2020-21 edition couldn’t take due to the deteriorating situation in India. In lieu of the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy took place. Dhumal admitted that the compensation scheme is another instance of delay and devising an acceptable formula for one and all isn’t as easy and linear.

“We have to discuss with states because they have to tell us who would have played, how many matches, who would have been in reserves. None of the states have sent any proposal for the compensation package,” Dhumal was quoted as saying, the Sportstar reported.

During the 2021 edition of the IPL, 73 uncapped Indians took part and their contracts ranged from INR 10 lakhs to INR 10 crores. However, around 700 players don’t have IPL contracts and they earn INR 10 lakhs to INR 20 lakhs in a full domestic season. From the Ranji Trophy, they get a match fee of INR 1.40 lakhs.

“The treasurer is right. The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has announced the compensation but how do you determine which are the players who would play 8 games or 10 games in a season? The reserve players get half, so how do you compute that? You can’t just give a flat amount to every player. Giving a lump sum to states is an option but how do you monitor the states?” a former BCCI official said.

BCCI confirms payments for VHT and SMAT

As per Dhumal, the Gross Revenue Share (GRS), has been kept pending since the 2016-17 season. However, he also said the payments for the VHT and SMT (INR 35,000 per match) have been cleared.

“I can also confirm that payments for the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have also been disbursed,” Dhumal stated.

Recently, it was also learned that the BCCI hasn’t shared the runners-up prize money to the Indian Women’s team after the 2020 T20 World Cup.
