BCCI sacks entire selection committee members
In a major development in Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has sacked the entire selection committee led by Chetan Sharma on Friday evening (November 18). This might be the board’s response to India’s embarrassing exit at the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Despite dominating Super 12 group-stage fixtures, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team lost against England by 10 wickets in the semi-final round.
India also failed to reach the final of the 2022 Asia Cup in September, so, some big changes in management were expected from BCCI. A few also predicted change in the selection committee as India failed to reach the semi-final of 2021 T20 World Cup as well. Chetan, the former Indian cricketer, was selected as chairman of the selection committee in December 2020 but the Indian men’s team failed to win any silverware during his reign.
Apart from Chetan (North Zone), Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone), and Debasis Mohanty (East Zone) were also part of the sacked selection committee as Abey Kuruvilla’s (West Zone) tenure had ended already.
The senior team’s national selector gets a four-year term and possible extension but this committee’s tenure proved as one of the shortest stints in Indian cricket history. BCCI have now invited applications for the position of national selectors for the senior men’s team and have set a deadline of November 28 to submit applications for the same.
According to a report from a cricket news website, all four members, including Chetan Sharma, are watching the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 tournament at different venues and didn’t receive any communication from BCCI over the new developments. Chetan Sharma’s panel announced the squad for New Zealand and Bangladesh tour on October 31 with some big changes to both the squads.
It has been learned that BCCI took a review of team India’s overall World Cup performance with management, including of selection committee in their recent meeting in Mumbai. Indian cricket fans are also expecting some big changes in upper management (captain and head coach) from BCCI in the coming days.
