BCCI announces India’s T20I and ODI squads for Sri Lanka series
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the upcoming bilateral series against Sri Lanka which is scheduled to commence on January 3, 2023. The Men in Blue will host the Islanders for three T20Is and as many ODIs across six venues in India.
Hardik Pandya will be leading the T20I side with Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy. Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar, who earned big bucks at the IPL Auction 2023 have earned a callup and will be a part of the T20I squad. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma continues to be out of the setup owing to his thuimb injury, and KL Rahul and Virat Kohli have also been rested.
Rohit Sharma will be back to lead the team in the ODIs, and Pandya will join him as the vice captain. Kohli too will be back in action for the ODIs. Rishabh Pant had been rested for the entire series and will not feature in either the T20Is or the ODIs. Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, has been named in both the squads.
Team India have endured two back-to-back dismal outings in the 50-over format against Bangladesh and New Zealand as they lost both the series. The side will be on the lookout to build a formidable unit and play aggressive brand of cricket keeping in mind the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Men in Blue’s last T20I outing came against the Kiwis wherein Hardik Pandya led the side to clinch the series 1-0. On the other hand, the Lankan Lions take their first 20-over assignment since the T20 World Cup 2022 and will aim to start the year on a high-note.
