The Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed the dates for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, and all five franchises have been made aware of the dates.
The Women’s Premier League will be played from March 4 to March 26. The BCCI confirmed that the first season would be held solely at two stadiums in Mumbai. Brabourne Stadium and the D.Y Patil Stadium will be the host for inaugural season. All these crucial details were sent in an email to the five WPL franchises on Monday, February 6.
Women’s Premier League is around the corner, and every cricket fan worldwide is buzzed. Based on the income from the acquisition of broadcast and franchise ownership rights, the WPL has already garnered attention for becoming the most valuable competition in women’s cricket.
The BCCI announced that it had sold Viacom the WPL media rights for 2023 to 2027 for INR 951 crore. On January 25, it also sold the five franchises for a combined INR 4669.99 crore.
Player Auction to take place on February 13
Hemang Amin, the CEO of BCCI, also announced the player auction will take place on February 13 in Mumbai in the email. Amin announced that 1500 participants had signed up and that the final roster would be made public later this week. At the auction, a maximum of 90 cricketers may be bought, with each squad containing between 15 to 18 players.
With the start date of March 4, 2023, the Women’s Premier League will get underway eight days after the Women’s T20 World Cup, which concludes on February 26 in South Africa. The BCCI opted to restrict the first season to Mumbai in order to lessen the logistical difficulties for players and coaches travelling to India from South Africa.
Additionally, the WPL auction is set to take place three days after the Women’s T20 World Cup begins. The franchises would have their eyes set on those fixtures in order to pick the best players to their arsenal.
