BBL: Nathan Lyon joins Melbourne Renegades on three-year deal
Veteran Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has signed for Melbourne Renegades on a three-year deal. Notably, the cricketer started his BBL career playing for Adelaide Strikers and then later joined Sydney Sixers, where he became an integral part of the team. However, as the tournament often coincides with Australia’s international commitments, the spinner only played 38 matches in the competition, picking up 44 wickets in the process.
Meanwhile, after signing the new deal, the 35-year-old mentioned that he was absolutely thrilled to join the team and to combine forces with Adam Zampa, who too joined Renegades this year. He added saying he has a lot of acquaintances playing for the Renegades and that is one of the reasons why he signed for the club.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Melbourne Renegades. (Marvel Stadium is) a place where I enjoy bowling, it tends to spin a little bit. I’m looking forward to hopefully joining up with ‘Zamps’ in a really good partnership and putting a show on for the Renegades fans,” the veteran spinner stated.
“I’ve got some really good friends who are part of the Melbourne Renegades, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to come down. There’s a good group of senior players there who I’ve played a lot of cricket with internationally and also domestically, then you look at the younger guys throughout the roster – it’s a pretty powerful squad in my eyes,” Lyon said in a statement shared by the Renegades.
It’s fantastic to have a player of Nathan’s calibre: James Rosengarten
After signing him, the Melbourne Renegades general manager, James Rosengarten, stated that he was extremely happy to have Nathan Lyon on board. He believes that the cricketer can prove to be an asset to the team in the coming years as he has the much-needed skill and experience.
“It’s fantastic to have a player and person of Nathan’s calibre joining the Melbourne Renegades. Nathan’s success over a sustained period at the highest level of the game speaks for itself, and he will be an incredible asset to our group with his skills and experience,” James concluded.
