Bangladesh spinner Mehidy Hasan struck on head during practice

Bangladesh’s woes in the World Cup continue after spin bowler Mehidy Hasan became the latest addition to the list of their injured players.

21-year old Mehidy was struck on his head during his team’s practice session at Southampton on Sunday. The spinner was apparently giving an interview on the sidelines when a shot by Sabbir Rahman off Mashrafe Mortaza’s bowling hit him on the side of his head. Mehidy was padded up to replace the batsman in the nets when the incident occurred.

Despite the freak injury, Mehidy wanted to continue batting in the nets but wasn’t allowed by the team management. The bowler is said to be out of danger, but his availability for the match against Afghanistan will depend on his concussion reports and the physiologist’s assessment on Monday.

Bangladesh have already suffered a setback after their in-form players Mohammad Saifuddin and Mosaddek Hossain missed the last game against Australia. They eventually lost the match by 48 runs.

With two wins in 6 games, Bangladesh are sitting in sixth place on the points table. They will have to win all of their remaining matches to keep their qualification hopes alive. But for that, they’ll hope to get their star bowlers back in the playing XI.
