BAN vs IND: 2nd ODI Review – Mehidy Hasan leads Bangladesh to series win
Bangladesh won the second ODI match by just five runs against India at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday (December 7). With this win, Bangladesh sealed the three-match ODI series and also registered two back-to-back ODI series against India at home. The in-form batting-all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz smashed 100* to help Bangladesh score 271/7 while batting first and then bowlers put in impressive spells to restrict India to 266/9.
Das’ decision to bat first backfired as Indian bowlers dominated the powerplay overs with early wickets. Star pacer Mohammed Siraj dismissed both openers, Das and Anamul Haque, in the first ten overs. Washington Sundar took Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan’s valuable wickets as Bangladesh fell to 69/6.
But last match’s hero Mehidy Hasan Miraz and experienced batter Mahmudullah pulled off a record 148-run partnership for the seventh wicket to keep Bangladesh on track. Mahmudullah scored 77 runs off 96 balls and Hasan Miraz smashed unbeaten 100 runs off 83 balls to help Bangladesh score 271/7 in 50 overs. For India, Sundar took three wickets while pacers Umran and Siraj grabbed two scalps each.
India collapse in chase
During India’s chase Ebadot Hossain bowled out Virat Kohli on just five runs in the second over after he came to open in injured Rohit Sharma’s absence. Soon afterwards, Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Shikhar Dhawan on eight to give Bangladesh a sensational start. Shakib took Sundar’s wicket and Hasan Miraz dismissed KL Rahul in the 19th over to put Bangladesh in firm control of the game.
But in-form Shreyas Iyer and bowling all-rounder Axar Patel put in a crucial 107-run partnership for the fifth wicket to keep India alive in the chase. Axar smashed 56 runs off as many balls and Shreyas scored the highest 82 runs off 102 balls before getting out on Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s delivery in the 35th over.
Bangladeshi bowlers made a good comeback in the last ten overs but Indian captain Rohit Sharma, while batting in the ninth position battling a thumb injury, smashed 51* runs off just 28 balls to drag the match to the last ball. India needed 20 runs from the last over to win the game and Rohit smashed two fours and a six but India failed just six runs off the target.
