Asia Cup 2023: PAK vs NEP Review – Pakistan thrash Nepal in opener
In the first match of the Asia Cup 2023 at the Multan Cricket Stadium, Pakistan kicked off their journey against Nepal with a massive 238-run win.
Pakistan, who opted to bat first after winning the toss, had a poor start as their openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq departed cheaply. However, the game turned dramatically as Babar Azam unveiled his master class. His brilliant century emerged as the turning point, underscoring his prowess in One Day Internationals.
Coming to bat at number three, Babar took Pakistan’s inning to a daunting total with a remarkable 214-run partnership with Iftikhar Ahmed. Babar’s remarkable 151 runs, including fourteen fours and four sixes, showcased his dominance as a batting maestro. Complemented by Iftikhar Ahmed’s quick-fire century, including eleven fours and four maximums, Pakistan scored an imposing 342/5 in their 50 overs.
As Nepal embarked on their pursuit of the formidable 343-run target, Pakistan’s bowling lineup showcased unyielding resolve. Shaheen Afridi’s fast-swinging deliveries, supported by Shadab Khan’s spin wizardry, left the Nepalese batters struggling.
Pakistan’s bowlers produced a comprehensive triumph, dismantling Nepal for just 104 runs and securing a resounding 238-run victory.
Top Performers of the Match
Babar Azam (151 of 131)
Pakistan had a very poor start as both of the openers were in the pavilion at the score of 25. Babar Azam entered the ground and initially took his time before unleashing his beast mode towards the end. He scored 151 of 131 balls including fourteen fours and four sixes and deservedly won the Player of the Match..
Shadab Khan (4/27, 6.4 overs)
Nepal team might have prepared themselves for the fiery fast bowling but leg spinner, Shadab Khan emerged as the best bowler of the match. His leg-spin along with brilliant googlies proved too difficult for the Nepal batters to deal with. The top order was rattled by the raw pace of Pakistan’s fiery pace bowlers. While the middle and lower order had no answer to Shadab’s mystery as he took four wickets.
What’s next?
Pakistan will face arch-rivals India on September 2 in Kand. While Nepal will play the same opponents on September 4 at the same venue.
