Ashes 2021-22: 5th Test, Day 3, Stats Review: Root’s unwanted record and more stats

Pat Cummins and his team continued their utter dominance against England on home soil as Australia defeated the visitors by 146 runs on Day 3 of the fifth Test in Hobart. With this victory, the Kangaroos clinched the series 4-0, exactly the same scoreline which the English side suffered in the last Ashes series in 2017/18 down under.

1 – With his spell of 6/37, Mark Wood is now the bowler with the best figures for England in Day/night Test matches. He surpassed skipper Joe Root’s figures of 5/8 which came against India in 2021.

13 – England has now lost 13 out of 15 Ashes Tests in Australia since 2013. They have managed to draw two Test matches with zero wins.

5 – Wood has now fifth-best figures (6/37) by an England bowler in The Ashes in the 21st Century.

6 – Ben Stokes got dismissed to Mitchell Starc for the sixth time in his Test career. R Ashwin and Nathan Lyon have accounted for his wickets 11 and nine times respectively.

10 – Australia have now played ten Day/Night Tests and have won all of them.

2 – Joe Root became the second England skipper with most defeats (10) in The Ashes. Archie MacLaren had lost 11 matches during his tenure as England captain.

68 – Rory Burns and Zak Crawley recorded the highest opening partnership for England in The Ashes since 2013. Michael Carberry and Alastair Cook had shared 85 runs opening stand in Perth.

33 – Pat Cummins has now taken 33 wickets in Day/Night Tests. He surpassed Josh Hazlewood’s tally of 32 scalps. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon have 56 and 34 wickets respectively.

8 – Joe Root became the visiting captain with most Test defeats (8) in Australia. Clive Llyod had lost seven matches down under.

3 – Pat Cummins has now taken the most wickets in the last three Ashes series. The pacer was the highest wicket-taker in the 2017/18 and 2019 series with 23 and 29 wickets respectively.

2 – Second consecutive Ashes series victory by Australia in Australia by 4-0 margin.

2 – With his hostile spell of 6/37, Wood recorded second-best figures in Test matches in Hobart. Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne tops the list for his bowling figures of 6/31 vs New Zealand in 1993.
