Ashes 2021-22: 1st Test, Day 1 – Cummins leads charge as Australia seize opening day
England’s run in the 2021-22 Ashes series started in a disastrous fashion after they were bowled out for a total of just 147 on Day 1. None of the England batters could score even a half-century as the Australian bowlers ripped through the England batting lineup.

Pat Cummins experienced a sensational start to his captaincy career, as he scalped a five-wicket haul on captaincy debut to push England on the backfoot. The right-arm pacer sent down 13.1 overs and gave away only 38 runs as the England batters were rendered clueless by Cummins.

The 2021-22 Ashes series started in thrilling fashion, as left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc sent back Rory Burns for a duck off the very first delivery of the match. Starc bowled a delivery on leg stump that swung late, and Burns tried to flick the ball. However, the opener missed the ball, and the red cherry crashed onto his stumps. Burns departed for a duck. And, England never really recovered after that.
No.1 Test batter Joe Root bags a duck
The No.1 Test batter in the world, Joe Root departed for a nine-ball duck in the England first innings on Day 1 of the Ashes Test. Josh Hazlewood bowled a good length delivery on off stump, and Root tried to defend it. However, the England skipper got an edge, and David Warner completed the catch in the slip cordon. England were reduced to 11/3, as their batting talisman walked back after failing to trouble the scorers.
