Ashes 1st Test, Day 5: Australia clinch a thriller despite England’s best efforts
Day 5 of the first Test of the Ashes 2023 was a roller coaster ride for both England and Australia despite rain playing spoilsport for several hours in the day and taking away a large portion of the overs. Aiming to chase down a target of 281 runs, Australia put in a sensational performance with the bat to secure a victory for the ages.
Scott Boland and Usman Khawaja stood at the crease at the start of the day’s play. Right from the start of the day, it was clear that the Australian team was playing for a draw, given the patient knock of Khawaja. After a brilliant ton in the first innings, Khawaja followed it up with a half-century in the second innings. However, England were sensational with the ball and clawed their way back in. But only to let the game slip away from a commanding position.
Here are the talking points from Day 5 of the 1st Test
Usman Khawaja’s resilience
Veteran Australian batter Usman Khawaja showcased his class once again and made it clear why he is one of the most brilliant Test batters in world cricket. Stuart Broad masterclass
Veteran English pacer Stuart Broad showed just why he has been one of the best and consistent pacers in English cricket. Broad was the highest wicket-taker for England in the second innings, taking three wickets and providing his side with crucial breakthroughs.
The Pat Cummins show
Australia can owe their emphatic win in the first Test of the Ashes 2023 to none other than skipper Pat Cummins. The Aussie pacer was sensational with the bat during the run chase. Cummins amassed 44 runs to his name in in 74 balls to win the game for Australia.
