Starting their preparations for international cricket, Afghan cricketers started their month-long training program in Kabul from 6th June. Their regime is currently focussed on T20 cricket. Afghanistan’s first foray in international cricket is likely to be the T20 World Cup, Asia Cup or a bilateral series against Zimbabwe. Captain Asghar gave a video message regarding these tournaments.
“(We are) considering that the Asia Cup or the T20 World Cup is going to be held. For this very reason, we have put on this training camp to be better prepared. Our goal will be to play better cricket in the Asia Cup…because the games are going to be played in Asia, and our spinners are world-famous. That is why we need to work more on our fielding and batting for the Asia Cup and we can hope to reach final or even win the Asia Cup,” he said.
While the possibility of T20 World Cup happening this year seems bleak, Asian Cricket Council members are working hard towards making Asia Cup T20 a reality. The 2018 Asia Cup was held in UAE and India went on to win the 20-over format tournament. Afghanistan have featured in three tournaments thus far and have defeated Sri Lanka and Bangladesh while tied a match against India.
