Always thought I could make The Ashes next year: James Anderson
Ahead of the West Indies series in 2024, James Anderson was informed by head coach Brendon McCullum that he was no longer in plans in Test cricket. Ahead of that, the cricketer prepared well for the entire summer which also included a three-match series against Sri Lanka but Anderson was handed a farewell Test at Lord’s against West Indies as England captain Ben Stokes called for a pace revolution, keeping the Ashes 2025 in mind.
The team management had significant doubt whether Anderson would be fit for the series against Australia, which was almost 18 months away. Meanwhile, the legendary pacer had no intention to call his time but had no other choice, given that the team management gave him an ultimatum. Reflecting on the decision now, the 42-year-old stated that he wanted to play the Ashes in 2025 but the team management ruled him out of contention.
“I always thought in my head I could make The Ashes at the end of next year. But obviously, they didn’t think that I could. I would have carried on and I will carry on still playing in some shape or form,” Anderson told Sky Sports.
“I think that’s part of the fun of being a professional sportsperson, to constantly find things to improve on. Especially in cricket, which is a heavily skill-based sport, there’s always something else to look into and try. I’ve always loved that side of it,” he added.
After retiring from international cricket, Anderson joined the England team as a bowling mentor. He was part of the series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and New Zealand and will also be with the team during the upcoming Tests against India and Australia in 2025. Meanwhile, the cricketer has also expressed his desire to play franchise cricket. He registered for the upcoming edition of the IPL but unfortunately, went unsold.
