All-round excellence: 4 wickets and 50 in a single IPL innings
All-rounders are a crucial and vital part of any team in any particular format. They bring a proper balance with their all-round abilities of scoring runs and picking up wickets. Smashing a half-century and snaring four scalps in the same match is a rarity in T20 cricket.
On that note, let’s take a look at the cricketers with 50 runs and four wickets in an innings in the IPL:
Paul Valthaty
Paul Valthaty became the first-ever player to achieve the dual feat while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings PBKS) against Deccan Chargers in 2011. The right-arm bowler took 4/29 (4) as the Chargers got restricted to 165/8. He then smashed 75 off 47 with eight fours and five sixes as his side won the game by eight wickets. He also won the Player of the Match (POTM) award for his all-round performance.
Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh did the double for Pune Warriors India (PWI) against Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2011. Skippering the side, Yuvraj hit 66* off 32 with four fours and five sixes as his team reached a total of 187/5. He then picked up 4/29 (4) but his efforts went in vain as PWI lost the contest by three wickets. Thought for his brilliance with both bat and ball, Yuvraj won the POTM award.
Kieron Pollard
Former Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Kieron Pollard grabbed the feat against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2012. MI batted first and posted 197/6 on the board with Pollard scoring 64 off 33, which included six fours and four maximums. He then snared four scalps for 44 runs in his four-over spell as RR lost the game by 27 runs. For his efforts in both innings, Pollard won the POTM award.
Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj is the only player to grab this milestone twice in the IPL. This time he showed his all-round skills for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against RR in 2014. His team batted first and reached a total of 190/5 as Yuvraj smashed 83 off just 38 with seven fours and as many sixes. He then spun a web with his spell of 4/35 (4) but it wasn’t enough as the Royals won the match by five wickets.
JP Duminy
JP Duminy joined the elite list by putting up a show for DC against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2015. His side batted first and managed to reach 167/4 as Duminy, who was also the skipper, struck 54 off 41. SRH then struggled against Duminy’s spin bowling as he picked up figures of 4/17 (3). DC won a close contest by four runs with Duminy winning the POTM prize.
Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh proved his worth for DC when he did the double over SRH in the ongoing 2023 edition. SRH batted first and scored 197/6 with Marsh picking up figures of 4/27 (4). He then slammed 63 off just 39 with one four and six sixes but it was not enough as his side lost the game by nine runs. Despite ending up on the losing side, Marsh still won the POTM award.
Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan put on a sensational dual performance for Gujarat Titans (GT) against MI in the ongoing 2023 season. MI batted first and scored 218/5 but Rashid picked up 4/30 (4). Batting at no. eight, Rashid went berserk as he slammed 79 off 32 with three fours and ten sixes but GT lost the game by 27 runs.
