Ajinkya Rahane sends Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field due to disciplinary issues
The Duleep Trophy final has been dominated by West Zone and the final day of the Test saw a bold move by West Zone’s skipper Ajinkya Rahane who sent off star batter Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field after the latter was involved in a verbal altercation with South Zone’s Ravi Teja.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who smashed a memorable double century in the first innings of the Duleep Trophy final, was seen involved in a verbal altercation with opposition batter Ravi Teja. The latter had complained about Jaiswal’s behaviour to the umpire, who had informed Jaiswal’s skipper Ajinkya Rahane about the incident.
Rahane took matters into his own hands and tried to calm down the young batter with a few words of wisdom. But the 20-year-old did not abide by his skipper’s words and was involved once again in the altercation with the batter, which prompted Rahane to intervene once again. The veteran Indian cricketer then took a bold step and gave Jaiswal the marching orders.
Ajinkya Rahane lauded for his bold call
The commentators on air applauded the Mumbai-born cricketer for his bold step as it would be an eye-opening lesson for the young Jaiswal, still in the nascent stages of his cricketing journey. He became the joint-fastest to 1000 runs in first-class cricket earlier in the game.
The incident is a rare occurrence on the cricket field as the players accused of verbal assaults are usually warned and penalised by the umpires before the verdict of the match referee. Rahane, who is the most experienced of all the players involved in final, took the decision to maintain the spirit of the game.
The final eventually turned out to be a one sided affair as West Zone thumped South Zone by 294 runs to lift the historic Duleep Trophy. Yashasvi Jaiswal was named the Player of the Match for his invaluable double ton in the first innings, which set up things in motion for Rahane’s side. Meanwhile, Jaydev Unadkat was awarded the Player of the Series award for his exemplary contributions with the ball.
