Afghan cricketer Mujeeb Ur Rahman hospitalised after testing positive for COVID-19
Afghanistan star Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been hospitalised in a Queensland hospital after testing positive for coronavirus. The spinner is currently recovering in the hospital. Mujeeb is in Australia for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League which is scheduled to start on December 10. Mujeeb is a part of the Brisbane Heat team.
Mujeeb landed in Australia last week and reported COVID-19 symptoms during the start of his mandatory two-week stint in hotel quarantine this week. According to the statement released by Brisbane Heat, the spinner will remain in the care of the Queensland Health Department until he is cleared to link with the team for the tournament. Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket medical staff have been in close consultation with the bowler during this period.
“We will work with the relevant authorities to ensure the integrity of the competition and well-being of the player are suitably addressed. He is a young man far from home and we will ensure he is looked after,” Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said.
“The health and safety of our players, staff and the wider community is our top priority this season. Both Mujeeb and the Brisbane Heat have our full support and we will ensure all Queensland Government protocols continue to be followed as he recovers,” Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s Head of Big Bash Leagues, said.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman tied the knot last month
It should be noted that before leaving for Australia, Mujeeb tied the knot last month. It was a grand affair as his teammates and other guests were seen dancing at the wedding party. The likes of Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib were some of the prominent faces seen in the Mujeeb’s wedding party.
Before that, he had plied his trade for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2020 which ended on November 10. The 19-year old had a disappointing campaign as he did not get too many chances in the playing eleven. He played just two games in IPL 2020 as Kings XI Punjab preferred the likes of Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin ahead of him. In those two games too, he failed to pick up any wicket and conceded at more than 10 runs per over.
