Aaron Finch ruled out of Bangladesh tour due to knee injury
Team Australia has suffered a massive blow as their regular skipper Aaron Finch has been ruled out of the remaining West Indies tour and upcoming Bangladesh tour. The dashing opener suffered a knee injury while practicing ahead of the five-match T20I series against West Indies. The wound aggravated in the fifth T20I and subsequently, Finch missed the first two ODIs of the three-match series against the Caribbean team.
With Finch’s recovery needing time, he’ll not travel to Bangladesh after the conclusion of the ODI series against the West Indies. The 34-year-old will instead fly to Australia where he’s expected to undergo a knee surgery after completing a 14-day quarantine period. This means Finch’s participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is also not certain. Nevertheless, the veteran is determined to attain full fitness ahead of the global event.
Aaron Finch disappointed by untimely injury
“I’m extremely disappointed to be heading home. This was considered the best course of action rather than traveling to Bangladesh, not being able to play, and losing that recovery time. I will have the surgery if required and start the recovery process ahead of the World Cup,” Finch said in a statement as quoted by Cricbuzz.
For the unversed, as many as seven first-choice Australian players had already pulled out of the West Indies and Bangladesh series. Now that Finch is also ruled out, the visiting team is dented even further. Hence, youngsters and inexperienced faces need to rise to the occasion with the big guns not available.
Meanwhile, Australia have pretty well in the ongoing ODI series, winning one of the first two ODIs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey was handed the captaincy duties in Finch’s absence and the southpaw has done a decent job so far. Under him, the Men in Yellow won the first ODI by 133 runs before suffering a four-wicket defeat in the succeeding game.
This means the third and final ODI, which takes place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Monday (July 26), is a decider. Hence, both teams would be determined to emerge victoriously.
