Aaron Finch backs Steve Smith to come good against India
India will play a three-match T20Is series against Australia at home as both the teams prepare for the T20 World Cup 2022. The series will provide the chances to test the different combinations and players for both teams. Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis who are all part of the T20 World Cup squad 2022 will miss the upcoming Indian tour due to low level injuries, but it has opened the door for Steve Smith to bat in the top-order.
Smith has been included in the T20 World Cup squad but his role in the side is yet to be defined. He has played at various positions in the T20I formats and with Tim David’s entry into the squad, there are speculations over Smith missing out on the playing XI at the ICC event. However, he will have three games to make a case for himself. Skipper Finch has confirmed Smith will play at number three in the batting line-up against India.
We know the quality that Steve’s got: Aaron Finch
Finch noted that Steve Smith is most likely to bat at three in Mitchell Marsh’s absence and hailed Smith for his extraordinary skillset. He also explained various factors that Smith brings in, including the tactical moves, and added that he is confident about Smith fulfilling any role that will be been assigned to him.
“Most likely he (Steve Smith) will bat at three in this series with Mitch Marsh being out,” Finch told reporters ahead of first T20I. “We know the quality that Steve’s got. He is one of the best players that has ever played the game over all formats of the game. So we know the skill that he has got and the game sense and the tactical nous that he has got. So we are really confident that regardless of what role he has to play within the structure of the squad, that he can do that very, very well,” he added.
