Shubman Gill lauds father for unwavering support after defiant century
In a stunning return to form, Shubman Gill smashed his way out of a 12-innings slump, smashing a remarkable century on the third day of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. The star Indian batter shared his joy in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Gill, previously under scrutiny for a series of low scores, joyfully celebrated his century in front of his father and expressed satisfaction, having performed well in his presence. The Indian batter highlighted the support he has received from his father throughout his journey. He credited his father’s advice to back his instincts and play his natural game for his successful innings.
“It is really satisfying and pleasing. He is someone who has always supported me and seen my journey. It was great to score runs in front of him. My father told me to back my instincts and play the way I am playing,” said Gill.
The batter acknowledged the tension during the initial moments of his innings, surviving two close calls. He attributed a bit of luck to breaking the slump.
“It feels good. The first 15-20 minutes were tense, with two referrals going my way. But I think when you are not scoring runs for three to four matches, you need that bit of luck. I think I got that. I am very happy that I was able to convert it into a hundred,” added Gill.
Patience, according to Gill, played a crucial role in his spectacular comeback. “But it is important to stay true to yourself, your basics and what got you here. If you change your way of play, it is only going to prolong your best innings and best chance to get your big one,” he added.
