Pat Cummins reflects on Australia’s extraordinary World Cup campaign

Pat Cummins-led Australia had one of the most memorable ODI World Cup campaigns of all time. The side came into the tournament and began their campaign with two back-to-back losses against India and South Africa. Things seemed to go from bad to worse when the side took on Sri Lanka in their third game of the tournament.

Getting off to a subpar start to the game with the ball, the Aussies were quick to bring themselves back in the clash. Aiming to chase down a target of 210 runs, the side put in a brilliant performance and registered their first win of the tournament. It was after that victory against Sri Lanka that Australia never looked back.

Going unbeaten throughout the tournament after their first win, the Men in Yellow even managed to topple the previously unbeaten India team in the summit clash of the World Cup in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.

Talking of their unbelievable campaign, Australian skipper Pat Cummins came forward to talk of the side’s journey in the tournament. He opined that the game against Sri Lanka became sudden death for them, and they knew that they had to be flawless.

“It almost became sudden death really, We thought we pretty much had to be flawless from then on to make the semis and we pretty much were. We started to find ways to win even when we weren’t having our best day. The belief never left, even at the start, we knew we hadn’t played our best but knew once we clicked, we could take on anyone and it proved to be the case,” Pat Cummins was quoted as saying by Cricket.com.au

Furthermore, Pat Cummins also talked of how he has not thought further than the ODI World Cup win when asked about the upcoming T20I World Cup that will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies in 2024.

“Honestly, I’ve not thought any further than this,” Cummins said. “We’ll savour this for a long time. The home summer’s always huge so we’ve got a couple for weeks to regroup and we’ll get together in Perth – the majority of the ODI team is the same as the Test team, so it will be good to go and see everyone again in a couple of weeks,” Cummins said.
