Reports: Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of the World Cup 2023
In an unfortunate news for Sri Lanka as spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the ODI World Cup 2023. According to India.com, Hasaranga will not be able to participate in the prestigious event in India due to a hamstring tear. Sri Lanka Cricket has four more days to announce Hasaranga’s replacement, as the final World Cup squads must be submitted by September 28.
Previously, Hasaranga was also unable to participate in the recently concluded Asia Cup due to the same injury. The last time he was seen in action was during the Lanka Premier League, where he led the B Kandy Love team.
During the recently concluded Lanka Premier League, Wanindu Hasaranga displayed exceptional all-round skills and was in top form. He emerged as the highest run-scorer of the tournament, accumulating 279 runs, and also claimed the most wickets with 19 to his name.
He won multiple awards, including the maximum sixes, highest wicket-taker, highest run-getter, and was named the Player of the Tournament as well. This highlights his significance in the Sri Lankan team. If Hasaranga is unable to participate in the World Cup, it will be a significant loss for the team.
Recently, Sri Lanka suffered another blow with spinner Maheesh Theekshana getting injured during the Asia Cup. However, it seems that he will recover in time for the World Cup and will be able to participate in the event.
On the other hand, their key pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera’s participation in the World Cup is also highly doubtful as he is also dealing with an injury and was last seen in action during the Lanka Premier League.
These injuries to important players will undoubtedly be a major setback for the team and could potentially hinder their chances of performing well in the prestigious tournament.
The highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to commence on October 5 in India, with a match between England and New Zealand, the finalists from the previous edition. Sri Lanka’s first game will be against South Africa on October 7th.
