Ravi Shastri reflects on possibility of Kohli batting at no.4
The ODI World Cup 2019 was full of ups and downs for the Indian team. Aiming to break their ICC jinx, the side failed to win the coveted title as they missed out on making it to the summit clash after they were eliminated in the semi-finals by New Zealand.
Speaking of the tactics used in the tournament, former team India coach, Ravi Shastri came forward to state that they aimed to make Virat Kohli bat at number 4 in the tournament. Shastri opined that the decision was almost put into place in order to break the top-order-heavy batting lineup. Furthermore, the former cricketer stated that Kohli coming down the order would have provided more stability to the middle order in case there was a sudden collapse of the top order.
“If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with MSD as well as him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up,” Shastri said on Star Sports’ Selection Day show
“You know, because if we lost two or three at the top, we were gone, and it was proved so just for reaching that experience. And if you look at Virat Kohli’s record, he is good enough at number four,” the former India head coach concluded.
