I think Dewald Brevis can play 2023 ODI World Cup: Robin Peterson
Former South Africa international Robin Peterson believes that youngster Dewald Brevis can very much be a part of the national team in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Notably, Brevis is yet to make his debut for the Proteas but, nevertheless, has impressed Peterson through his incredible performances in franchise and domestic cricket.
He called Brevis a gifted cricketer and lauded him for his match-winning knock (57 runs off 41 deliveries) for MI New York against Washington Freedom in the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket. On the other hand, Brevis is expected to be one of the reserves for the mega tournament, but as per Peterson, the youngster should feature in the 15-member squad as he possesses a lot of talent, which can come in handy for skipper Temba Bavuma.
“Can he go to the World Cup? Of course, I think he can. Guys don’t necessarily have to play a lot of cricket before going there. I mean we’re talking about a gifted cricketer who can field, can bowl leg-spin and has the power game to play spin in Indian conditions as well,” Peterson stated while talking to iol.co.za.
“Dewald’s talent is unparalleled. He basically won that eliminator (in the MLC) for us. You can now see the character is starting to develop alongside his talent. The closer those two merge, then we’re going to get a special player,” he added.
Dewald Brevis yet to make a mark in India
Notably, the 20-year-old is yet to make a significant impact in India. The selectors might be in some dilemma about his selection. Brevis played only seven matches in IPL 2022, scoring 161 runs. Notably, the cricketer did not get an opportunity to play for Mumbai Indians in the 15th edition of the competition.
Thus, he neither has much experience nor the stats that would back him for a World Cup spot. However, the cricketer is in terrific form, and that might play a role in his getting the ticket to India.
