RCB announce Andy Flower as their new head coach for IPL 2024
One of the most popular Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore, recently took to social media to announce that former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower will be their new head coach. Flower will succeed the Director of cricket operations, Mike Hesson, whose tenure with the club ends on August 31.
Furthermore, the rest of the coaching staff with Hesson, including head coach Sanjay Bangar, are also expected to make their exit from Bangalore. Royal Challengers Bangalore took to Instagram to announce the news to their fans and followers.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome ICC Hall of Famer and T20 World Cup winning coach, Andy Flower, as the Head Coach of RCB Men’s team. Andy’s experience of coaching IPL & T20 teams around the world and leading his teams to titles at the PSL, ILT20, The Hundred, and Abu Dhabi T10 will help in developing a championship-winning mindset and take RCB’s #PlayBold philosophy forward,” Royal Challengers Bangalore captioned the post.
Andy Flower had discussions with several other IPL franchises
Before the confirmation of FLower’s appointment with Royal Challengers Bangalore, several reports emerged that stated that the coach was in discussions with several other IPL franchises like Rajasthan Royals to take up leadership roles.
His appointment with Bangalore came after the conclusion of his contract with Lucknow Super Giants, as they have already enlisted former Australian cricketer Justin Langer.
Still in search of their first IPL title, Flower’s appointment in Bangalore could do the franchise a world of good. Led by Faf du Plessis, the side had a forgetful season at the IPL 2023, where they failed to make it to the knockout stages of the competition.
They were eliminated from the group stage after finishing in sixth place in the standings, with 14 points in just as many matches. Winning seven games and losing seven, Bangalore will be hopeful that Flower’s appointment could turn things around for them in the forthcoming season.
